Like a Giant Transformer

Taranaki Industrial Electrical Services (TIES) has designed and built an electrical distribution centre (EDC) for an Auger VR500 land drilling rig. The power source – the first of its kind in New Zealand – has been built into a 40ft cargo container and has nine tonnes of electrical control equipment inside.

Like a giant transformer, it can be quickly connected or disconnected to incoming power supplies and field equipment. There will be 3.75 megawatts power running through three generators attached to the EDC. It can supply power to two 630 kilowatt motors, with provision for a third and many other smaller motors at the same time.

The VR500 belongs to Wellington’s Webster Drilling & Exploration. Imported from the United States, the rig was taken to Ngaere’s Cheal site for commissioning before travelling to Dannievirke where it will drill for Tag Oil.
